Historians Learn of Illinois Role in War of 1812
The Putnam County Historical Society learned about the role of Illinois in the War of 1812 at its quarterly program Sunday at the Agriculture Museum in Hennepin.
Gillum Ferguson of Naperville, who wrote the first comprehensive book about the role Illinois played in the War of 1812, spoke at the program.
“There’s been very little published in the past, particularly about Illinois’ role in the war,” Putnam County Historical Society president Sidney Whitaker said while introducing Ferguson.
The Illinois territory was formed in 1809, encompassing modern-day Illinois, Wisconsin and a part of Michigan, according to Ferguson.
“It was a huge territory,” he said.
