IVAC Sees Caterpillar Rejection of Illinois as Wake-up Call

Elected leaders in Peoria County weren’t the only ones to receive a rejection slip from Caterpillar for relocation of a Japanese factory to their area.

Marci Duro, Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, felt the same pain. The chamber sent a formal proposal to Caterpillar in January, suggesting two viable locations for the plant — one the defunct Hennepin steel mill, and the other a 2,000-acre site also near Hennepin.

“I received a personal phone call Tuesday from Jim Dugan, Caterpillar spokesman, on behalf of CEO Doug Oberhelman, explaining why they were not choosing any site in Illinois,” Duro said today. “Oberhelman was adamant that those who took the time to make a formal proposal receive a personal phone call. I think that was a nice gesture.”
