The Putnam County School District held a candlelight memorial service Sunday evening at the high school gym to honor the memory of Judy Gedraitis, an English teacher who died Dec. 2 following a sudden illness.

Superintendent Jay McCracken said Gedraitis was a gifted teacher who had an “amazing impact” on those around her.

“All of us have been so blessed to know her,” he said.

In remembrance of Gedraitis, the school district will establish the Judy Gedraitis award, which will be presented annually, he said.

Colleague Carmela Rodriguez said she enjoyed a good working relationship and friendship with Gedraitis.

“I regarded her more like a big sister,” she said. “Judy was one of my best friends. She made me feel so important to her.”

Judy’s daughter, Ashley Gedraitis, said she wasn’t there to mourn her mother — she was there to celebrate her.

“We’re really touched that we could be here,” she said.
