County Libraries Ready to Rock
The Putnam County Public Library District is working hard to make sure this is a musical summer for residents. Complimenting the state-wide summer reading theme “Read to the Rhythm” is a full schedule of concerts and musically-themed programming.
Concerts will begin with the McNabb library’s presentation of award-winning singer/musician Rick Kelley, who will perform a free, family concert with high energy, original and fun rock-n-roll, at noon Saturday, June 13, in Coleman Park in McNabb.
At noon, Saturday, June 20, at Riverfront Park in Hennepin, Barry Cloyd will perform “The River’s Song: The Importance of our Midwestern Rivers”, which traces history in story and song in a way that blends blues, folk, Celtic and roots music into a unique style.
At the Granville library, acclaimed accordionist Mike Basin will explore several musical genres from around the world at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 29.
At noon, Thursday, July 16, Rick Pickren will perform a free outdoor concert in the open park area just south of the Putnam County Community Center in Standard. Pickren’s voice, harmonica, banjo and guitar will bring to life the stories of the frontier, woven through familiar western songs.
This year’s summer reading program begins the week of June 22 at each of the six library locations in Putnam County. The program offers opportunities for readers of all ages to participate in prize drawings. Each time a book is read and returned to the library, complete a prize drawing entry form to be randomly drawn. The more you read during the five week program, the more chances you will have to win a prize. Winners will be drawn July 26 and announced the following week.
In addition to concerts, great books and prizes, musical programs and events will take place throughout the county. Music science, instrument arts and crafts, guest readers, music themed movie nights and recording sessions are just some of the many events planned this summer.
“I know we have other concerts in the works, so we will have two more events to add to the list ... I wanted to share all the great programming we have put together with everyone,” Brittany Blomquist, programming director for the Putnam County Library District, said.
