The Putnam County Sheriff’s office held its 14th annual Kops and Kids fishing derby Saturday. The derby was initiated by sheriff Kevin Doyle as a way to build trust and provide positive interactions between law enforcement and children.

This year, 19 children in third, fourth and fifth grade participated in the event. The kids were placed in groups with a deputy and were taken to a pond owned by Jeff and Leslie Brooks to fish. After fishing, the deputies and kids returned to the HennepinPark for a cookout. The kids also received a T-shirt and a prize of their choice.

The Putnam County Rotary again donated a bike for one boy and one girl. Names were drawn and the winners were Tori Balma and Jimmy Baele. Ramon Mandujano also won a free month of ice cream, donated by Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats.

The event is funded yearly by donations. This year, donors included PC Rotary, Jeff and Leslie Brooks, Dynegy-Hennepin Plant, Sandra Woest, Wanda and Perry Forbeck, John and Wendy Louis, The Corner Store, Hennepin Boat Market, Zebco fishing supplies and Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats.
